Philly Resource Exchange
This past spring we brought you news of the Resource Exchange, a building materials reuse store, in Philadelphia. Construction Junction and the Pennsylvania Resources Council have been supporting this startup nonprofit organization as it moves through the necessary steps to begin operations. For example, Mike Gable -- CJ's Executive Director, serves on the Resource Exchange's Board of Directors and CJ has provided support for legal services associated with a recent opportunity for the Resource Exchange to move to a new location.
To date, The Resource Exchange has successfully diverted more than 600 tons of waste material out of landfills in its first year, and reused it in the community for creating, building and learning. The Resource Exchange got their start by salvaging building and art materials, scenery and props from the film production industry in a warehouse in the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
The organization's original Navy Yard location was inadequate for their needs and with a $25,000 grant from PPL EnergyPlus, they were able to secure and move to a new location in Philadelphia's Port Richmond/Kensington neighborhood. For the time being, the organization will continue to operate by appointment until it is fully staffed.
This area of Philadelphia is evolving into something of a salvage and reuse district and there is a very interesting article in this month's GRID Philly about the area and community impact of its three reuse facilities. Click here for a digital version of the magazine and look to page 16.

The CJ Buzz
Friday night, September 30th, from 5:30pm to 9pm... downtown Pittsburgh is the place to be for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District. CANstruction is part of the Gallery Crawl this year. Canstruction, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that holds annual design and build competitions to construct fantastic, giant sized, structures made entirely out of canned food. In each city after the structures are built and the winners declared the creations go on view to the general public as giant art exhibits. At the close of the competitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to the local food banks for distribution to community emergency food programs.
You can see the sculptures created in Pittsburgh, including the CANstruction Zone traffic cone, as well as all the other great sculptures, at the gallery space on the 2nd floor of 937 Liberty Avenue from 5pm - 8pm.
Construction Junction donated $100 to Lami Grubb Architects & CANstruction Pittsburgh in support of their CANstruction sculpture. Our support along with other sponsors, helped the Lami Grubb team create their sculpture and ultimately donate over 1,400 cans of vegetables, fruit, beans & pasta to families in the Pittsburgh region.
