1830's Salvage Available for Reuse

Greetings Reuse Fans

With your help, CJ diverts over 5100 doors per year for reuse. We receive a fair number of older doors and are glad to be a valuable resource for finding a specific type of door for your home restoration. This week, our deconstruction crew received some rare doors from an 1830’s farmhouse in Westmoreland County!

We don’t get much Pre-Civil War stuff at CJ so, when we do, it generates a lot of excitement. The doors are entirely handmadeand feature mortise and wood peg construction. We usually remove the hardware from doors but we left the original Baldwin patent cast iron hinges (imported from England) attached to these ones. Several of them have their original thumb latch hardware, too. Super cool stuff! We also got a couple of mantels from this house with the same mortise and tenon construction.

We would prefer to see these old houses restored but, for a variety of reasons, many of these older structures in remote locations are simply not candidates for restoration. We can save pieces of these historic properties but property owners (including energy companies) need be proactive if these materials are to be saved. Our deconstruction crew can make that decision easier! Contact our Deconstruction Manager, Brian Swearingen, at 412-512-1413. -- Mike Gable, Executive Director
