Message from South America

Greetings Reuse Fans. Three months into my family's trip through South America we have encountered some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet from the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador to Machu Picchu in Peru to the Atacama Desert in Chile! I have been on the look out for interesting building material reuse stories or CJ-like operations, but have not found anything yet. I have, however, seen lots of environmentally appropriate construction materials, with the most intriguing example being a hotel in the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia constructed entirely of salt blocks—even the mortar is salt and water!

The Uyuni Salt Flat is the largest on earth. In 1993 the President of Bolivia wanted a venue built in the middle of the salt flat and the first structure built of salt blocks was begun. The crust of the salt flats varies in thickness from about 4" to more than 10'. The blocks were initially cut by hand so it took more than 3 years to construct the President's venue, which was never fully utilized due to the environmental challenges of dealing with waste and water. The next 3 hotels were built on the edge of the salt flat near existing towns with infrastructure, and the blocks are cut with a large circular saw.

Thanks for supporting reuse  --  Mike Gable, Executive Director
