Styrofoam Recycling-Suggestions Needed!
Greetings Reuse Fans (and recycling fans),
In fall 2015, some of you may have noticed that we placed a small bin in the City of Pittsburgh’s recycling area to collect Styrofoam. We wanted to test how much the bin would be used. Boy did it get used! It filled up at least once a day. The drop off is currently suspended, and may be permanently discontinued, owing to some serious issues.
Styrofoam can be recycled, but it's only cost effective to haul it if it's been densified. Our partner, Appliance Warehouse, has a machine to densify styrofoam to ship it economically to an end user. But it's not economically viable to collect the loose Styrofoam dropped at CJ. The only way we can get a regular pick up of this material by Appliance Warehouse is to pay transportation costs. We've reached out to other organizations, but none is able to assist or to offer an alternative drop off solution.
Questions: Would you be willing to pay $5 each time you dropped off a load of Styrofoam at CJ? Or would the fee deter you from using a CJ drop off? Would you prefer to drop your styrofoam off at Appliance Warehouse on the South Side free of charge (you have to call them first)?
Thanks for your feedback -- Mike Gable, Executive Director
