The Greener Garden Native Plant Sale

Steel City Rowing Club (SCRC), in an effort to reduce further its environmental impact, is hosting...

The Greener Garden Native Plant Sale, May 25th from 4pm to 8pm & May 26th from 7am to 6pm at its “Green Boathouse", 101 Arch Street, Verona, PA.

"The many benefits of planting native plants are:

they provide food and shelter to wildlife
they require little irrigation and maintenance, and
chemicals are not required for their upkeep.

In short, gardening with natives will save you time and money.” -- Mark Brownlee, American Native Nursery

Prior to the plant sale SCRC is hosting The Green Initiative Seminars (6:30pm - 7:30pm):
-- May 2nd -- “Living Green”,
-- May 9th -- “Honey Bees and Native Pollinators”,
-- May 16th -- “Rain Barrels”, and
-- May 24th -- “Native Gardens”.

The seminars are $25.00 per session or $65.00 for the entire series. Discounts available for Steel City Rowing Club members. For more information or to register for the seminars please visit our website or call 412 -828-5565.

Proceeds from these events will assist SCRC in completing the park area adjacent to our “Green” boathouse as a native habitat which is open to the community as an outdoor classroom and fund the on going programming and community outreach.

Steel City Rowing Club is a non-profit organization devoted to developing the strength and character of individuals of all backgrounds through the discipline and teamwork of rowing and through opportunities to serve others.

Thank you. April (showers bring May Flowers!) Ricky Reinoso and Mike Teti used their holiday breaks from school to perform some good old-fashioned spring cleaning for us here at CJ! On April 14th 11 volunteers from the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council’s AmeriCorps project…

A few months ago we began a search for a Community Outreach Coordinator to join the Construction Junction team. We were looking for just the right person and were very lucky to find Natalie!! She has quickly become an integral member of the CJ workforce.

Natalie DeRiso earned her Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from The American University in Washington D.C. in 2005. After working as a staff educator for Sportsworks at the Carnegie Science Center she was the Docent Coordinator and Community Programs Manager for the Senator John Heinz History Center.

Natalie believes that all lives can be enriched through lifelong learning and that it's never too late to find a new passion. She is the mother to a 3 1/2 year old dare devil who thinks roofs are for jumping off of and the wife to a husband… who thinks roofs are for jumping off of. Natalie is typically in need of a nap.

And what does Natalie think of CJ?

CJ is one of those places that when you visit for the first time you think to yourself “I bet this is an awesome place to work”, and it is! This is an organization with a clear purpose and the folks working here truly believe that they can do great things for our city. That type of dedication is awe-inspiring and I am honored to have the chance to work with them. There are so many fun, interesting, educational and zany things here at CJ and my hope is to take some of the knowledge and passion of the staff and make it available through outreach, classes, workshops and online tutorials to our customers.

Judy, thanks for your email, we already know the map has a bug and we’re working on de-bugging it. We’re in the east end of Pittsburgh, one block to the north of Penn Ave, and one block to the west of Braddock Ave.

This Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. kids are invited to stop by to make an upcycled earring holder for Mom. Mom not into earrings? That’s okay! The earring holder is constructed from a 9 by 12 inch piece of peg board and can be used for holding craft supplies, tools, gardening supplies and whatever else you can think up!
